In an interview with KRCC on Friday, the writer admitted that the offer to develop the series was one he couldn't refuse.

"[It was] something I couldn't possibly even imagine, and certainly not pass up," explained Winter in discussing the opportunity to develop the prohibition drama, as well as being able to work with producer and pilot director Martin Scorsese.

Winter got the opportunity to work closely with Scorsese in developing the tone and look of the series.

"The entire month of going to Martin Scorsese's office and watching gangster films with him was the best film course you've ever had tones a billion…" boasted Winter. "He's [Scorsese] very much about truth and real moments and real performances. He understand the juxtaposition of violence and humor, having an incredibly tense scene and then letting the air out of it, let the audience breath with a light moment."

As far as the drama coming to an end, Winter revealed that he was part of the decision to end it. "We say down, it was somewhere in the middle of season four when…I had a conversation that we felt inadvertently, Nucky's story seemed like it was heading toward a conclusion."

"He [Nucky] was already making plans to try to relocate to Florida and the more we talked about that," continued Winter, "we decided maybe we should start thinking about an end point here."
