Recently it was announced that Penny Dreadful would be getting a number of new characters this season, and on Wednesday one of them made a debut on set for the Showtime drama.

Director James Hawes first teased the introduction of "a new character" on Twitter Tuesday night, though he did not say who would be the one to premier in the first episode of Season 2.

Newly confirmed cast members for Season 2 include the legendary Patti LuPone in a mysterious role, as well Johnny Beauchamp (Stonewall). Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) will also be appearing as an investigator and Cork actress Sarah Green will step in as the daughter of Evelyn Poole, also known as Madame Kali (Helen McCrory).

An introduction of Beauchamp or Green could be setting either one up as a potential love interests for Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), who has his heart broken by Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) at the end of Season 1. Carney was on set filming new scenes on Tuesday and Wednesday, suggesting that he could perhaps be on set again for the big introduction.

Bumped up as regulars this season are Helen McCrory and Simon Russell Beale (Ferdinand Lyle), both of whom appeared briefly during the show's first season.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second, longer season in 2015.
