But with the possibility of Natalie Portman showing up much less in the next installment due to dumping Thor, it could set up a relationship between him and Sif that has been hinted at so far.

In the comics, Celtic god of Lightning Leir arrived in Asgard planning to ask Sif to marry him. A worried Sif agreed, once two conditions were fulfilled. The first condition was that Leir help her find Thor and bring him back to Asgard. Leir agreed and they traveled to Earth in search of Thor.

The trail led from Earth to the Black Galaxy, where they finally found Thor. Leir got them back to Asgard in time to witness the final battle between Ymir and Surtur, which heralded Ragnarok.

Having Leir aid Sif in bringing back Thor (who could be reeling from the events of Jane Foster (Portman) dumping him), would make sense with the rumored Ragnarok plot line following. While Leir is interested in Sif, this could create a love triangle with Thor knowing Sif best and the fact that he now looks towards her with Jane Foster gone.
