Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has been charged with a DUI after Baltimore police pulled him over for speeding early Monday morning.

According to The Baltimore Sun, Phelps was pulled over just outside of the Fort McHenry Tunnel, after an officer's radar clocked him driving 84 mph in a 2014 Land Rover southbound along Interstate-395, going 40 miles per hour over the 45mph speed limit. The police officer then followed Phelps through the tunnel and pulled him over just beyond the toll plaza.

Phelps was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speed and crossing double lane lines after the officer determined he was impaired.

"Mr Phelps...was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests," police said in a statement, noting he was cooperative and didn't try resisting arrest.

This is Phelps' second DUI arrest. He was previously arrested in 2004, when he was just 19, in Wicimoco County Maryland. He pleaded guilty and received 18 months of probation.

Phelps was also suspended from competition for three months by USA Swimming after a photo surfaced of him smoking with a marijuana pipe at a party in 2009.

The swimmer, who is the most decorated Olympian in history with 18 gold medals and 22 overall, has been training for competition again in recent months, USA Today reported. He has officially come out of his brief retirement following the 2012 London games, where he won four gold medals.

Representatives for Phelps have not commented on the charges, and it is unclear how they will affect his eligibility to compete in the 2016 games.
