On Friday, actress Charlotte Ritchie who will be playing the nurse, explained to Radio Times how her character will enter the series and what she will be going through in future episodes.

"She begins quite badly and sort of redeems herself later on," Ritchie said. "She has a couple of really tragic moments which is awful and then she kind of gets into her stride a bit more- but she still continues to make mistakes along the way."

The actress doesn't seem to find this story too surprising since her character has a crazy job so naturally other parts of her life will probably fall into that category.

"To be honest, she's a nurse and I kind of think nurses are amazing so if she makes a few mistakes I don't blame her!" Ritchie said.

While the other ladies of the series tend to wear those old-fashioned hats, it turns out that Nurse Barbara will be adding another piece of attire on her head.

"My character wears hairbands a lot and I've started wearing hairbands, like I'm 10 again," Ritchie revealed. "But it's really, really nice because it's actually really useful- it keeps your hair off your face. I'll probably wear one today actually..."

Call the Midwife is expected to return for a Christmas special this year on BBC One.
