Seven years sober, the Somewhere In My Car singer decided to reach out to fellow artist Brantley Gilbert who was struggling with his own sobriety.

"Keith's actually been a really good dude to me," declared Gilbert in an interview with Country Countdown USA on Sunday. "When I was making changes in my life, I was down and out, I was even in the hospital, he showed up and spent several hours with me one day out of nowhere, just encouraging me."

"Looking back, I was thinking since I was fifteen years old, I'd been sneaking beers, I hadn't been sober for a lot of these things," explained Gilbert, referring to experiences with his career. "I was nervous about writing, performing, and doing my job like I used to. He told me, 'Man, it's a whole new world. It's different but you're gonna have a lot more fun with it.' He was just uplifting and reassuring, he's one of those guys when you meet him, you know he has a good soul. He has an awesome heart and is an awesome dude. That was a pretty impressive thing to me."

Urban knows from experience what it's like to struggle with substance abuse. In an interview with Rolling Stone in June, the singer opened up about his own dark days in the early 1990s.

"I liked to get crazy after the gig and when I would do a lot of drugs is when I was home off the road," he explained.

Urban went into rehab in 1998 and married actress Nicole Kidman eight years later. Early in their marriage, Kidman went out of town for a film and Urban found himself slipping back into his old lifestyle. "I would find myself feeling very alone, and very lost, and very vulnerable to my own ways," explained the singer.

When Kidman returned she staged an intervention and helped Urban get back on the right track. "She is so celestial…" declared the singer. "I was born into her."
