Jessica Lange's performance of Lana Del Rey's Gods and Monsters has proven to be a big hit with the American Horror Story: Freak Show audience, shooting up in the iTunes charts.

Lange, as freak show owner Elsa Mars, sang Gods and Monsters during Wednesday night's episode of FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show. Many fans took to her performance after the song was uploaded in full on iTunes.

As of Friday, Lange's Gods and Monsters cover is no. 1 in the iTunes Soundtrack charts, higher than recent hits like Let It Go from Frozen. The song is even in the Top 50 of the overall iTunes chart, with the Del Rey version charting even higher. As of Friday morning, Del Rey's version is no. 38 on the chart.

Some fans of the series have expressed confusion about Freak Show featuring covers of songs that take place after 1952, when the series is set. The first episode featured Lange covering Life on Mars by David Bowie, which was recorded in the '70s while the second episode featured Sarah Paulson singing Fiona Apple's Criminal, which was recorded in the '90s. Del Rey's Gods and Monsters was released just two years ago.

American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy spoke about the use of modern music in Freak Show with Entertainment Weekly.

"I was very inspired with Baz Luhrmann. I love what he does with his movies like Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge where you don't play period stuff, you do stuff from all eras that fit the story," Murphy said. "So we decided we only were going to highlight musical artists who at some point in their career had identified themselves as feeling like freaks or misfits or outcasts, which our people are going through. That's why we do David Bowie, Fiona Apple, Lana Del Rey, Kurt Cobain. We do people who sort of have the same feelings as our characters do."

American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
