Jamie Dornan is famously playing the part of Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey film, but could Les Miserables actor Eddie Redmayne have played the part instead?

According to Variety, Redmayne publicly said he would audition for the sexy role of Christian, but Fifty Shades author EL James shot him down.

"She took to her Twitter feed to go, 'Under no circumstances!'" Redmayne said in the new issue of Variety. "It was like, all right, all right! Am I that bad? I can put a whip in my hand. I can get all kinky, can't I? Apparently not."

Redmayne is actually friends with Dornan and other British actors including Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield. "We used to go to the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood, and split a sandwich between us because that meant we could get cheaper parking," Redmayne said. "We'd swim and play table tennis for hours." Redmayne is currently getting a lot of Oscar buzz for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

Redmayne even nominated Dornan for the recent ALS Ice Bucket Challenge online. The Ice Bucket Challenge raised money and awareness for ALS, aka Lou Gehrig's disease.

Recently The Daily Mail said that Us Weekly reported that the two stars Dakota Johnson and Dornan had to reshoot certain footage because it "didn't feel 'passionate' and producers have been disappointed by the lack of chemistry."

"Dakota isn't coming off sexy enough," a second source reportedly said about the starlet. "Ana needs to be naive, not a dish-rag."

Fifty Shades of Grey is set to come out in February 2015.
