Netflix's Orange Is the New Black is slated to compete in the comedy categories at the upcoming Golden Globes and SAG Awards, hoping to fare better than they did last year.

Orange Is the New Black has officially made the switch to comedy after competing as a drama at the Globes and SAG Awards in 2013 for its first season, according to a new Variety report.

While the rules are very lax for the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards are more strict about switching genres, however, they were able to do it in this case.

"A petition to do so was considered by the SAG Awards Committee and approved," a SAG representative told Variety on the issue.

Orange Is the New Black, which has a healthy mix of both comedy and drama, had a difficult time achieving nominations last year at the Globes and SAG Awards. The Golden Globes only gave it one nomination, for the show's lead actress, Taylor Schilling (who plays Piper Chapman). Meanwhile, SAG ignored the show entirely.

The prison series fared much better competing as a comedy at the Emmys this summer, where it was able to rack up 12 nominations and a win for Uzo Aduba, who plays Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren.

It remains to be seen how Orange Is the New Black will fare at the Globes and the SAG Awards, but it is safe to assume that it will have an easier time getting in with relatively weaker competition, compared to the drama categories.

Orange Is the New Black is set to return for Season 3 in mid-2015 on Netflix. The first two seasons are currently available in full on the streaming site.

The Globes and SAG Awards will announce their nominations in December, with both ceremonies airing in January of 2015.
