USA's Allyson Felix took gold in the women's 200-meter sprint on Wednesday winning in a time of 21.88 seconds. Felix managed to beat out her great rival from Jamaica, Veronica Campbell-Brown who had beaten her into the silver medal position in the 200M at successive Olympic Games prior to this turnaround.

Felix seemed relieved more than anything to have finally taken gold, and looks to have put the controversy surrounding her coming into the Games well and truly behind her.

The 26-year-old was at the center of a controversial qualifying campaign for Team USA coming into the London 2012 Olympics. Felix was adjudged to have finished fourth in her Olympic trial for her 100-meter race, and Jeneba Tarmoh was originally given the qualifying spot for her third place. However, following a review it was decided that the race had been a tie for third place and the two athletes had taken part in a dead heat both with a time of 11.068 seconds.

The tie for the third spot was then said to go to a coin toss or a run-off between the pair. However, Tarmoh was disgusted at the decision and posted the following via Twitter about her frustrations: "USATF boy. Never been this upset in my life. Time for a change."

The Central Coast Conference sprinter also added yet another post: "Got third at trials and still gotta deal with politics. smh... Wow Life isn't fair. My time will come."

After 8 days of the ruling being up in the air, the two eventually agreed to a runoff, in which the spot would finally be determined. However, in a surprising twist Tarmoh then decided not to go through with the meet, meaning the final qualifying spot was given to Felix by default.

According to a statement by her agent through USA Track And Field on July 2, Tarmoh officially announced her decision.

"I Jeneba Tarmoh have decided to decline my 3rd place position in the 100m dash to Allyson Felix. I understand that with this decision I am no longer running the 100m dash in the Olympic Games and will be an alternate for the event. As an alternate I understand that I will be asked to run if another 100m runner decides not to for personal reasons, and/or on the 4x100m relay."

According to a Sports Illustrated interview a tear-ridden Tarmoh gave her reflections about the heart-breaking outcome.

"I'm always going to remember my first Olympics as the year when my 100-meter spot was taken away from me.''

Although she ended up facing another issue with Track and Field officials, Jeneba Tarmoh will be competing in the 4x100 relay race for Team USA in the preliminary rounds on Thursday, August 8.

As for Felix she seems to have put the controversy well and truly behind her and will be delighted with her gold medal.
