FX's Sons of Anarchy featured a significant emotional moment for Nero (Jimmy Smits) as he processed the latest developments in Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and Gemma's (Katey Sagal) saga.

'Sons of Anarchy' Season 7: Does Wendy Want Jax To Take Revenge On Gemma?

Smits spoke with Entertainment Weekly Radio about the scene in the show's latest episode which featured Nero desperately trying to reach out to Gemma, commenting on the childlike nature of his pleas.

"From this guy who I really perceived as being somebody who's very solid in a lot of ways in this kind of outlaw world, there's a sensitivity to him but he's a kind of guy-guy, that was an interior little boy moment that was able to kind of peek through," Smits observed. "I think it was because of the relationship. When two people are in love-real love-you're able to let down all of those guards that you put out there for the world. What the audience sees physically that moment is, 'Stop the lies. No more deceit between us if we say we love each other.' That's what I hope that moment conveys."

He also commented on the unspoken bond that Nero feels with Jax as fathers yet still brothers.

"I think the fact that they both have children and there's a lot of guilt there that they haven't been the fathers that they could've been," Smits said. "I think that's one of the reasons why there's an emotional bridge between them. It's okay for them to have these softer moments."

As the series moves towards its conclusion, there has been a fascinating uptick in emotional beats. The episode last week featured a huge breakthrough moment between Tig (Kim Coates) and Venus (Walton Goggins) and now with Nero's very emotional moments with both Gemma and Jax, the weight of these relationships are becoming further and further defined.

With this established, it wouldn't be Sons of Anarchy without some tragedy, so these scenes will only make the conclusion more epic and meaningful to both the characters, and the audience.

Sons of Anarchy airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
