Venom was expected to get his own movie in 2017, which would be in between the Sinister Six movie and third Spider-Man standalone, but was canned when the intended director Alex Kurtzman left the franchise in order to create a shared universe with Universal's monsters. Instead, Sony is said to be planning a female-led superhero movie in its place.

But is that it for Venom? Probably not.

The character is still so well liked and one that people want to see done right after the fan outrage from Spider-Man 3 that he could appear as soon as the Sinister Six. It would allow the team to add one of the biggest names in that universe to the roster as well as round out the team that seems to be hanging in limbo right now.

It was expected for Carnage to join Venom for the standalone movie, but those plans could be scrapped depending on what is happening with the Sinister Six movie, which may already have enough people in the roster that they will have to cut the other villain.

With Andrew Garfield possibly returning to help try and revive the series, adding Venom would give Sony another face that would draw in fans and could set up for future altercations with Spider-Man if they get the green light to make more standalone movies of either characters.
