Vanessa Paradis, the French actress and singer most famous in America for her 14-year relationship with Johnny Depp, opened up about love and knowing when it's time to move on in the September issue of Harper's Bazaar.

The interview was conducted two days before her split from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor was made public, but her words about being unhappy take on a new light amid the breakup.

"Sometimes you could be in an unhappy relationship; you are very much in love with someone, but it's making you unhappy and you think things can change and you can work it out," the 39-year-old told the magazine.

Depp, 49, first began dating Paradis in 1998. The couple have two children together, Lily-Rose Melody Depp, born in 1999, and John Christopher "Jack" Depp III, born in 2002. A representative for Depp confirmed the pair's split on June 19.

In the interview with Harper's, Paradis discussed the importance of love and learning not to pursue something that isn't right.

"Love is the strongest and most fragile thing we have in life," Paradis said. "Nothing is ever for sure, but when something in love doesn't work from the beginning, it's never going to work. Don't push it."

During their relationship, Depp, Paradis and their children split their time between Los Angeles, St. Tropez and their private island in the Bahamas. Paradis acknowledged the way her mega-famous household had to cope with fame, but she added that the focus was always family first.

"It takes a lot of thinking and organization," she said. "We have a very privileged life. But even when we are in L.A., where it's focused on the film industry, it's also very family-oriented. I'm in love with the schools. We try to keep it normal."

Though Americans know Paradis primarily for her attachment to Depp, she is an active entertainer in her own right. She picked up a slew of awards for her role in the 2011 Canadian drama "Café de Flore," and her most recent album, "Divinidylle," was released in 2007.
