In November Netflix saved Longmire following the popular crime drama's cancellation on A&E, but even as the series lives in it's uncertain whether Netflix will commit to the program long-term.

The deal between Warner Horizon and Netflix officially went through on Nov. 19. According to Deadline, the subscription service had picked up Longmire and AMC's axed drama The Killing.

While The Killing had only been ordered for a final season, Netflix has not divulged its long term plans for Longmire. This season could be the last for the show, but if the program's overwhelming fanbase stays dedicated it could continue for any number of seasons. Netflix sometimes has shorter seasons than standard cable networks, though the episodes will be longer without commercial interruption.

This is not the first time Netflix has come in to save a cancelled series. In 2012 Netflix revived the short-lived cult classic Arrested Development, which was shut down after three seasons on Fox in 2006. While the length of a single season was cut from 22 episodes to 15, it did give the series a second chance to reclaim its audience.

Longmire was A&E's highest-rated scripted series at the time of its cancellation and the second-highest rated series on the network total behind the reality program Duck Dynasty. Production for the new episodes is scheduled to begin in March.

Longmire will likely return for a fourth season on Netflix during the second half of 2015.
