The Fox reimagining of ITV's Broadchurch closed out its 10-episode freshman season in early December, but the crime drama did not gain enough viewers to push it into a second round of production.

The premiere fetched only 4.8 million viewers, according to TV Line, and the finale only reached 4 million TV sets.

While episode 10 seemed to wrap up the story, the final moments left the door open for further exploration.

"It was not meant to be self-contained and we have a lot of ideas and a lot of excitement about where it could go," said showrunner Anya Epstein following the Dec. 11 finale, according to Zap2It.

"It remains to be seen whether we'll get a chance to actually do that," Epstein continued, noting that, at the moment, "it doesn't seem terribly likely."

For those who did fall in love with the short lived story of Detectives Emmett Carver (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Anna Gunn), Broadchurch will air a second season on ITV in 2015. One caveat, however. Gracepoint and Broadchurch have slightly different endings, so viewers may want to catch Broadchurch's season 1 finale before settling down for season 2.
