ABC's Once Upon a Time is going to delve deep into what made the Queens of Darkness become who they are in the second half of season 4.

'Once Upon a Time's Maleficent, Cruella & Ursula Have Surprising 'Connection' With Two Characters

The winter finale featured quite the introduction of Cruella De Vil (Victoria Smurfit) and Ursula (Merrin Dungey) and the return of Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten). The show will be exploring how the villains became villains going forward.

"We're going to find out how Ursula became Ursula," Once Upon a Time co-creator Edward Kitsis told TVGuide.com in a new report. "We're going to see that she had a surprising cross with somebody from our world. And we're going to be meeting a different Cruella than we would remember from the 19[60]s movie. ... Perhaps Cruella herself has magic or powers."

'Once Upon a Time's Rumple Teaming Up With Queens Of Darkness Requires Some 'Guile'

This would certainly punch up Cruella's abilities considering the extent of her villainy basically boils down to her desire for dalmatian fur.

Kitsis' fellow co-creator Adam Horowitz said in the report that they would continue the "evil isn't born; it's made" concept explored from the beginning of Once Upon a Time.

"I think we'll find that that applies to these new women as well," he added. "Hopefully the audience will discover that there is quite a bit of depth to each one of them and reasons for why they're doing what they're doing beyond just pure evilness. Which is not to say that there isn't a large dollop of delicious evilness."

"Yeah, you can't have the Queens of Darkness and not have some evilness," Kitsis noted.

Once Upon a Time returns for the second half of season 4 on Sunday, March 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
