While it is relatively difficult to find a through line for FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show, one actor believes that his character is the "engine" of the whole season.

Actor Denis O'Hare, who plays the conniving con man Stanley on American Horror Story: Freak Show, recently spoke with the Toronto Sun heading into the final three episodes of this season.

O'Hare colorfully described Stanley as "the billiard ball that scatters the other balls."

Stanley has wormed his way into the inner workings of Elsa's (Jessica Lange) freak show, essentially orchestrating the death of Ma Petite (Jyoti Amge) and helping Elsa stage Ethel's (Kathy Bates) death as a suicide. He also managed to convince Jimmy (Evan Peters) to part ways with his lobster hands in the latest episode.

"(Stanley) really is the instigator," O'Hare said. "He's the engine of the season, because what he's doing is setting everything into motion, with his attempts to co-opt, murder, corral and change, weaving this spell around different people."

It seems like Stanley will not stop until he kills as many freaks as possible, almost putting him on a parallel course with Dandy (Finn Wittrock), whose penchant for killing knows no bounds.

O'Hare also spoke about co-creator Ryan Murphy's revelation that each of the seemingly unconnected seasons of American Horror Story are actually intertwined.

"It didn't surprise me, because (Murphy) is an awfully clever guy," O'Hare admitted. "I know they put a lot of thinking into the resonances. The biggest, obvious resonance this year was Pepper (played by Naomi Grossman) being in both Asylum (the second season) and in our (current) season. But there are actually two other ones coming up that are very, very strong resonances which are fascinating."

There have not been any overt connections to season 1's Murder House or season 3's Coven, so will those become connected in the final arc of Freak Show?

American Horror Story: Freak Show returns for the final three episodes of the season starting on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
