Chmerkovskiy recently talked to The Buffalo News about Dancing With the Stars, with the dancer admitting that the video clips aren't always entirely reflective on reality.

"Sometimes it's not the exact reality [that you see] that's true," he revealed. "They sometimes emphasize parts that I didn't think needed emphasizing."

Asked about if the various celebrities and pros on the show aren't necessarily as nice as they are shown, he dodged the question a bit, though he admitted:

"I've got nothing to hide. I don't shy away from my reality. I'm not just this, I'm not just that. I'm a lot of things. Not everyone can be a sweetheart."

On the plus side, Chmerkovskiy was asked about the variety of celebrities from different walks of life who have competed on the show, from transgender Chaz Bono to Iraq War veteran J.R. Martinez, who has prominent disfigurements on his face.

"We're a very compassionate country," he noted. "We are still the most liberal-minded country in the world. ... I've been pleasantly surprised by many people on the show and how they wound up doing."

He said that he has developed some friendships with certain contestants outside of the show, such as his brother Maks Chmerkovskiy's celebrity partner Meryl Davis from season 18 and season 16 finalist Jacoby Jones.

Dancing With the Stars returns for its landmark 20th season on Monday, March 16 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
