True Detective was a frontrunner at the Golden Globes on Sunday, but the series walked away without a single win.

'True Detective' Golden Globe 2015 Predictions

While some fans remain uncertain as to whether or not the season 2 cast will be able to recreate that classic True Detective magic, most agree on the outstanding performances given by Matthew McConaughey (Rust Cohle), Woody Harrelson (Marty Hart), and Michelle Monaghan (Maggie Hart). It was therefore a major surprise when the series lost out on Sunday night.

The HBO crime drama had been up for Best TV Movie or Miniseries, as well as a Best Supporting Actress nod for Monaghan and Best Actor nominations for McConaughey and Harrelson.

'True Detective' Might Be Going for A Documentary Style For Season 2

While a Best Supporting Actress win didn't seem likely, even the Jan. 8 Variety predictions saw True Detective walking away with Best TV Movie or Miniseries and Best Actor In A TV Movie or Miniseries for McConaughey.

This isn't the first time the show has been shut-out for a major award ceremony. In 2014 the series stood as a frontrunner at the Emmys, though the only award it claimed was for directing.

Could the show's award season misfortunate upset expectations for season 2? Could it even harm viewership? The series remains a favorite among fans and critics, even if it hasn't managed to score any Golden Globe wins just yet.

The show's upcoming season will star Vince Vaughn (career criminal Frank Semyon), Colin Farrell (Detective Ray Velcoro), Rachel McAdams (Detective Ani Bezzerides), and Taylor Kitsch (Officer Paul Woodrugh). Penned by creator Nic Pizzolatto, the new episodes will follow the murder of a California city manager.

Production is already underway in California.

True Detective will return on HBO for a second season mid-2015.
