The "rare connection" between Vanessa Ives and Dorian Gray is undeniable on Showtime's Penny Dreadful.

Vanessa's Biggest Obstacle On 'Penny Dreadful' Revealed

During season 1, Vanessa (Eva Green) discovered that intimacy with Dorian (Reeve Carney) unlocked her connection to a demon, one which then took possession of her for weeks and nearly cost Vanessa her life. While Vanessa believed that it was her closeness to Dorian which released the demon, perhaps it is Dorian's own supernatural attatchment which led to her encounter with evil.

On Monday Showtime released an interview which explored the scene between Vanessa and Dorian during the show's first season (featured below).

Dorian Gray Dances On 'Penny Dreadful'

"At this point in life Dorian Gray has done everything," explained series creator John Logan. "He's bored until he meets Vanessa Ives."

Logan went on to explained that the couple's relationship is "somewhat supernatural and somewhat erotic and somewhat simply romantic."

So did Dorian's immortality connect with Vanessa? Could their union lead to other supernatural occurrences? Logan implied that it was sex itself which made Vanessa vulnerable to possession, but perhaps it was the combination of that vulnerability and some other supernatural element which had to do with Dorian and his unnaturally long life.

For now Vanessa's most stable relationship seems to be with close friend Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), whose own supernatural origin allowed him to exorcise the demon which possessed Vanessa when she was with Dorian.

Penny Dreadful returns on Showtime for a second season on April 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
