FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show has officially come to an end and as always, people are updating their season rankings for the horror anthology series.

'American Horror Story' Star Naomi Grossman Talks 'Alien' Rumors For Season 5

American Horror Story: Freak Show ended Wednesday night with what some found to be a satisfying ending while other found it to be wrong. Each season of American Horror Story has its lovers and its haters, but where does Freak Show stand up against the first three seasons?

Starting off relatively strong, Freak Show centered on Elsa Mars' (Jessica Lange) cabinet of curiosities, emphasizing the tragedy of being a "freak" in the 1950s while also showing how those that were ostracized could find comfort in each other. As the season went along, there were several threats that came and went, hoping to disrupt that camaraderie, and many were unfortunately killed off.

However, the season ended with Elsa going to a special carny heaven, where all the freak show performers were reunited and able to do their show to an adoring crowd.

As for potential negatives, many people thought that the use of anachronistic songs at the beginning of the season was distracting or just bad, plain and simple. There were also some complaints that the season lacked a driving force, with the show making it unclear who they should be rooting for or what the overarching story was.

Stylistically, the series probably reached new heights with careful attention to period detail, similar to Asylum. Its rotating ensemble was similar to that of Coven, while the constant specter of death was similar to Murder House.

It remains to be seen how Freak Show will be remembered, but if this is the last time we seen Lange on the show, it will serve as the end point for what could be called the Lange Era.

American Horror Story season 5 is expected to premiere in October on FX, though the network has not yet announced a specific air date.
