The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards aired on Thursday night, Sept. 6. 

Rihanna started the show by performing "Cockiness" and "We Found Love."  Viewers were also treated to comedian Kevin Hart's opening monologue as well as his take on the Chris Brown and Drake feud.

Shortly after, the Best Pop Video award was given to One Direction for "What Makes You Beautiful," after which they almost ended up breaking their Moonman trophy.

Miley Cyrus and her recently buzzed about hair made her way to the stage and introduced singer Pink. The musician then performed her hit "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)."  However, she had opened with a couple of verses from another popular song "Get This Party Started." 

The Best Male Video went to Chris Brown for "Turn Up the Music."  His acceptance speech had been very brief but it got straight to the point.

"Thinkin' Bout You" was then performed by Frank Ocean near a ring of fire.

The Best Hip Hop Video was awarded to Drake featuring Lil Wayne for "HYFR."  Drake dedicated the win to any kid who has had to take "a long walk home by yourself."

One Direction hit the stage again, only this time to perform. Surrounded by excited young teens, they sang "One Thing."

Nicki Minaj took the Best Female Video award home for "Starships" while sporting a lacy bodysuit with red embellishments. Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz hit the stage shortly after.

Green Day took to the stage and briefly played one song before switching to singing "Big Brother" halfway into their performance.

The "Twilight" cast presented an exclusive premiere for their upcoming "Breaking Dawn Saga."  However, Kristen Stewart was clearly missing on stage.

One Direction took home another Moonman for Best New Artist for "What Makes You Beautiful."

Alicia Keys then performed her new song "Girl on Fire," which included Nicki Minaj rapping along with some gymnastics from Gabby Douglas.

The Video of the Year went to Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris for "We Found Love."

Taylor Swift then brought the show to a close with "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," along with some furry creatures on stage.
