The Vampire Diaries returns tonight, March 12, with a brand new episode directed by Ian Somerhalder.

'The Vampire Diaries' EP Talks Lily Salvatore

The episode is called The Downward Spiral, which will focus on Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) reeling since her mother's (Marguerite MacIntyre) death.

Caroline decided to switch off her humanity in the last episode and The CW Television Network's YouTube channel uploaded a sneak peek clip Wednesday of the result of Caroline's choice.

Ian Somerhalder Discusses His Directorial Debut On 'The Vampire Diaries'

The clip can be viewed below.

In it Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are looking for any indication of where Caroline fled.

"How's her house?" Elena says over the phone to Stefan while she inspects their dorm.

"Totally empty. Caroline took everything, but the damn doors off the hinges," Stefan replies to her while looking at the empty living space of Caroline's childhood home.

The two try to understand Caroline's logic and Stefan even makes a remark about Elena burning down her own house.

"Do you think she's trying to cut off all ties to her past?" Elena will ask Stefan.

Stefan becomes mad and makes the following funny, yet harsh comment: "I certainly don't think she's having a yard sale, Elena."

They then agree to get in touch with each other if they stumble upon anything that will lead to Caroline.

On Wednesday, TVLine shared that Somerhalder revealed his character has "to step up and do a bunch of stuff to make s--- work" in regard to Caroline turning off her humanity.

Damon really only tends to care about his brother and Elena though so Somerhalder has "to be very careful about making sure Damon's not too concerned with a lot of other people."
