Cole and Cassie need a few more hours to save humanity (it's a daunting task, you know), and Syfy has decided to give out virus-fighting heroes a little extra time. Still in the midst of its freshman season, 12 Monkeys received an early renewal on Thursday.

"12 Monkeys is a show that has exceeded expectations at every stage," said Jeff Wachtel, President and Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, according to Deadline. "It's had a great first season creatively, and is building a dedicated audience."

An adaptation of the similarly titled 1995 film, 12 Monkeys will see a switch in showrunners for the second season. Natalie Chaidez, who oversaw the first year, will move to Syfy's Hunters while executive producers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett will step up to fill her shoes. Considering Matalas and Fickett penned the pilot, its safe to assume that their promotion will not alter the quality or direction of the series.

The sophomore season will air in 2016.
