Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat recently revealed that the upcoming holiday special will be in Victorian London.

'Sherlock' Star Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals How He 'Painstakingly' Remembers His Lines

Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) are apparently going back in time. Moffat reveled to Entertainment Weekly this week that the show's leads will be in Victorian England for the highly anticipated special.

"The special is its own thing," Moffat explained. "We wouldn't have done the story we're doing, and the way we're doing it, if we didn't have this special. It's not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it - as we could hardly conceal - it's Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It's kind of in its own little bubble."

Benedict Cumberbatch Talks 'Surreal' Experience Of Fans Watching Him Film 'Sherlock'

Many Sherlock fans had been curious about Cumberbatch and Freeman wearing Victorian costumes while filming for the special. It will likely be a treat for fans to see Sherlock and Watson in an era when the original Sherlock stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were set.

The special is finished according to Moffat, though there is no specific premiere date established either for the U.K. or the U.S.

However, it is anticipated that it will air in the U.K. in December to make room for season 4 in early 2016. Sherlock has been operating on a pattern of seasons airing every two years, beginning with season 1 in 2010, season 2 in 2012 and season 3 in 2014.
