Over the weekend, ahead of tonight's premiere, Portwood spoke out, revealing her excitement for her MTV return, and speaking of her time behind bars.

"I didn't want people to have a bad taste in their mouth of things that happened in the past," Portwood told PEOPLE Magazine on Saturday. "I thought, 'this is my chance, don't blow it.'"

In June 2012, Portwood, who had previously been ordered to attend a court mandated rehab program, chose to instead turn herself in to serve a 5-year prison term (she was granted an early release in Nov. 2013).

"The only thing I could see happening to me if I [hadn't gone] to prison is I would have died," she explained of the decision. "I would have overdosed. When you're an addict you know what your bottom is."

Now, Portwood hopes she can be a better example for her 6-year-old daughter, Leah.

"Obviously I've had some speed bumps, but it's never too late to try to get your life back and do something positive," she said.

Behind bars, Portwood got her G.E.D. and is now planning to further her education in college.

"The whole time I was in there I worked my a-- off," she said. "There were hundreds of hours of drug addiction classes. I did extra classes, parenting and anger management and even started teaching. I put myself in there for a reason so I didn't want to make it a waste."

Teen Mom OG premieres on MTV tonight at 10 p.m. Below is a sneak peek of the new season.
