As Bates Motel continues to be disturbing and creepy, Freddie Highmore pointed out how the relationship between the mother and son is going to blossom.

'Bates Motel' Season 3 Trailer Shows Bleeding Birds & Incestual Romance

On Thursday, The Sydney Morning Herald posted an interview with Highmore who plays the iconic Norman Bates on the series thriller. The actor mentioned how his character is going to be less of a child and will be more in the adult range where his mother is.

"I think the way that Norma and Norman's relationship evolves in the third season is very much one of these equals of two adults battling it out, as opposed to Norman being the son," Highmore said. "I guess there's always been hints of this sort of husband/wife relationship that Norma and Norman share. And I think it goes a lot more in that direction in the third season."

The actor also talked about how Norman will be more vindictive as he feels less like a victim.

"Norman is certainly more grown-up and can manipulate her a lot more than perhaps he would in the past," he explained. "He stands up to her a lot more control in their relationship, as opposed to merely being led by his mother. He starts to try and lead her."

Highmore then revealed his favorite aspect of playing Norman Bates, which has to do with his mother's spiritual energy.

"I think more the internal struggle with Norman, where you see him taking on these different personalities, and fighting this sort of, you know, presence, which is there in Psycho, and I think in the third season comes out a lot more, this inner presence of his mother," the actor said.

Bates Motel airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on A&E.
