On Friday, USA Today reported that that McGraw is defending his decision to perform at the concert that benefits a Sandy Hook group when critics claimed the concert was to support gun control.

The concert at the XFINITY Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut on July 17th will feature the country music saw and will benefit a group called Sandy Hook Promise.

The nonprofit group was reportedly organized by families whose children and siblings were among the 20 children and six educators who were fatally shot in the Sandy Hook Elementary School in December of 2012.

The objective of the function is to "prevent gun violence and focus on mental health issues."

When the singer announced his performance on Twitter, he received controversial backlash for attending and supporting the event.

"Conservatives own most of the guns & buy most of country music, you do the math if you want to push #GunControl.. Just Saying @TheTimMcGraw," one user tweeted.

When it was announced that singer Billy Currington was the opening act for McGraw, he took to Facebook to say that he wants to stay out of the debate.

"I've never been one to take on controversial issues - I'm a singer," he wrote. "I do feel strongly about honoring and supporting the Sandy Hook community and will be making a donation to a local organization."

McGraw made a statement on Thursday where he faced the controversy head-on.

"Let me be clear regarding the concert for Sandy Hook given much of the erroneous reporting thus far. As a gun owner, I support gun ownership," he said. "I also believe that with gun ownership comes the responsibility of education and safety - most certainly when it relates to what we value most, our children. I can't imagine anyone who disagrees with that. The concert is meant to do something good for a community that is recovering," McGraw said.
