"For all intents and purposes, I am a woman," she said in the interview, according to Mashable.

Jenner's statement was highly anticipated after she had her trachea scraped, one of the first steps usually taken in men who want to become women.

"My whole life has been getting me ready for this. It's not just the last few years where they've been treating me as a joke," she said.

In a voiceover, Sawyer confirmed that Jenner will continue to go by "Bruce."

"I would always say I've always been very confused about my gender identity - since I was [a child]," Jenner said. "[Bruce] has been telling a lie his whole life about who he is, but I can't do this any longer."

When discussing whether his family was supportive of his decision to live life as a female, Jenner said Kim Kardashian was the first to find out when she caught her wearing a dress.

"It was like this big secret in the family, and we never talked about it again," he said.

When they found out, all of his children cried.

"They all cried ... mainly because they didn't want anyone to hurt Dad," Jenner said.

Since Kardashian's husband, Kanye West, brought light to the situation, the star has been more accepting.

"Look, I can be married to the most beautiful woman in the world, and I am. I can have the most beautiful little daughter in the world, and I have that. But I'm nothing if I can't be me; if I can't be true to myself, they don't mean anything," West said.

"Since then, Kim has been, by far, the most accepting," Jenner said.
