"Dallas" star Larry Hagman has died.

The TV actor passed away at a Dallas hospital on Friday, Nov.23  due to complications from cancer. at the age of 81.

"Larry was back in his beloved Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved most," his family said in a statement to Dallas Morning News. "Larry's family and close friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday. When he passed, he was surrounded by loved ones. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for. The family requests privacy at this time."

Hagman is survived by his wife Maj, of nearly 60 years, and their two children.

"This is so sad. Larry was really someone who was loved by everyone," Hagman'z agent Joel Dean told PEOPLE. "Me especially. He was the most loving, wonderful, generous man. And he was a true trouper."

Hagman revealed last year that he was battling throat cancer, but recovered enough to reprise his original "Dallas" character J.R. Ewing on the TNT reboot of the classic series.

"As J.R. I could get away with anything - bribery, blackmail and adultery. But I got caught by cancer," Hagman, said in a statement to PEOPLE in October, 2011. "I do want everyone to know that it is a very common and treatable form of cancer."

"Dallas" co-stars Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy, who also reprised their roles in the remake, were reportedly present when Hagman passed.

Prior to "Dallas" Hegman was best known for starring on the 1960s sitcom, "I Dream of Jeannie" for 5 seasons.
