Jimi Hendrix’s 70th Birthday, New Album Scheduled For Release
The late Jimi Hendrix's 70th birthday is on Nov. 27 and in honor of the legendary guitarist, a new album with 12 previously unreleased recordings is set to come out in March, according to ABC News.
"People, Hell and Angels" hits stores on March 5, which is a set of 12 unheard songs remastered by Hendrix's team and his top producer Eddie Kramer.
Hendrix is known as one of the most influential electric guitarists of 20th century music. He died in 1970, only four years after he rose to stardom, from drug-related asphyxia at the age of 27. He was also known throughout his career for his excessive drinking and drug use.
Hendrix had several signature moves on stage, including playing his guitar with his tongue or teeth, setting his guitar on fire and playing it behind his back. He was also an icon of fashion for the hippie era of the 1960s by wearing scarves as headbands, velvet suits and vintage military blazers.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience included bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. They headlined Woodstock and Hendrix became a household name in electric rock n' roll.
Hendrix lived in London and died there in 1970. John Bannister, the doctor who initially attended to him when he was brought to the hospital, said Hendrix had asphyxiated in his own vomit, which had filled his airways, according to ABC. Hendrix also reportedly took nine of his girlfriend's, Monika Dannemann's, sleeping pills, though the normal dosage was half a pill.
Forbes put Hendrix at #9 among the top-earning dead celebrities in 2011, coming in at $7 million because his estate is keeping his music alive, according to MSN. His Woodstock performance is doing a limited run in theaters right now.
Many believe that the music world would be a different place of Hendrix lived longer and performed well into his 70th birthday. Paul McCartney, Aretha Franklin, Barbara Streisand, Stills and Nash, and many other musicians are still performing among the younger and newer artists taking the stage.
