What's the deal with the end of Downton Abbey? Is there going to be a movie or not?

Final Moments Of 'Downton Abbey' Will Be 'Very Exciting?'

The rumor has been going back and forth, and this time the odds of a film following the final episode are becoming more of a possibility. On Tuesday, New York Daily News found out from executive producer Gareth Neame that the discussion of a film is "on the table."

But as of right now, there's not much more to it than that.

'Downton Abbey' Actress Weighs In On Movie Rumors After Series Ends

"I've read a lot of speculation about sequels and spinoffs, and they're all just rumors," Neame said. "What's true is that there has been discussion of the movie."

"There are no firm plans yet," he added. "Who knows?"

The producer also pointed out how there were low expectations of how this show would do despite the fact that it became a success in the UK and the United States.

"Remember, this is a show I was originally told no one in the U.S. would understand," Neame said.

He then mentioned that he wouldn't have minded if the series lasted longer than six seasons, but it's probably for the best to let it run its course.

"I think we could have legitimately kept it going a bit longer," he said. "But you do want to leave people wanting more, not less."

Downton Abbey Season 6 is expected to premiere in the United States in early 2016 on PBS.
