Arnold Schwarzenegger is hoping his soon to be ex-wife still has a soft spot for him.

After years of infidelity and even with a child born outside of their marriage, the actor is working on getting back together with Maria Shriver. The former governor of California dropped the bombshell this week in an interview with one of Germany’s top-selling newspapers. Schwarzenegger told the Bild: “We’re not fighting a war. I still hope for reconciliation; I still love Maria.” The ex-politician also revealed that he spent Christmas holiday with Shriver and the children.

The strained couple had their lives turned upside down when it was revealed that Schwarzenegger father a child by his live-in housekeeper and nanny, Mildred Baena. In 2011, after twenty-five years of marriage, Shriver filed for divorce.

In his new memoir, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story," the body building actor admitted to what he called a "hot affair" with another action star: Brigitte Nielsen. The two began their affair while Schwarzenegger was living with his now ex-wife Shriver, according to the book, which was released Monday. The 65-year-old actor admitted that he knew the relationship with Nielsen was only temporary as he was beginning to feel the need to marry Shriver.

"How serious it was with her [at the time], I don't know," the Danish actress reported last June to the Daily Mail. "He never spoke about her - and the way he was living his life with me, I felt I was the only one. Then I realized about him and Maria and, wow, I felt cheated."

Nielsen and Schwarzenegger started the affair while they filmed the movie "Red Sonja" in 1985. "

Maybe I wouldn't have got into it if he said, 'I'm going to marry Maria and this is dead serious,' but he didn't, and our affair carried on," Nielsen said.

In his new book Schwarzenegger also talked about his affair with Baena. He said that it was "the stupidest thing" he did in his marriage to Shriver and that it "inflicted tremendous pain" on his family.
