Shortly after midnight this morning, the former NFL running back, who was suspected of killing his former cell mate while serving a 31-year sentence for driving his car into three teenagers, assaulting an ex-girlfriend and vehicle theft, was found unresponsive at the Kern Valley State Prison.

"Lawrence Phillips is dead--and officials are investigating his death as a suicide after he was found in his prison cell," TMZ reported on Wednesday. "Phillips was found at 12:05 AM Wednesday when staff conducted a routine security check and noticed Lawrence was unresponsive. Officials say he was transported to an outside hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 1:27 AM."

After news broke, comments were shared on Twitter.

For the most part, fans spoke of Phillips' impressive football career.

Peter King, of Sports Illustrated, revealed how Coach Dick Vermeil attempted to help Phillips as he was plagued with off-the-field behavioral issues.

Then, another Twitter user reminded fans that there was more to Phillips than great football.
