It is no secret that Nintendo is currently lagging in the console business. While it dominated the previous generation with the innovative Wii, the lackluster reception of consumers to the firm's next flagship machine, the Wii U, has thrown Nintendo's console business into question. Now, with the Nintendo announcing the reveal of its next-generation console, the rumored NX, it would seem like the Japanese gaming giant is throwing all its efforts into making sure that the NX would be well-received.

While the gaming world is indeed intrigued by the mysterious NX, the fact that it is being officially announced far behind its two biggest rivals, the rumored PlayStation 4 Neo and the Xbox One Slim, has gotten many Nintendo fans quite nervous. Augmented by rumors that Nintendo is trying to include VR support for its next console, it is starting to appear like the Nintendo NX is the firm's make-or-break device.

If the NX does become a massive success, it would definitely be good for both gamers and Nintendo. However, what would happen if the NX gets received like the Wii U? If this is the case, if the NX proves underwhelming both in sales and in performance, it might very well be time for Nintendo to hang up its gloves in the console business.

For all intents and purposes, the Nintendo NX would embody everything that the Japanese gaming firm has acquired through decades-long experiences in the gaming industry. Thus, if there is a console that might ultimately prove to be a game-changer for the next generation, it would be the Nintendo NX. As much as this is true, the possibility of the NX being a complete miss is also very real, however.

This possibility becomes even more notable when the NX's rivals, such as the Xbox Scorpio, are released. If rumors could be believed, the Scorpio would boast far more power than current-generation consoles. Thus, if Nintendo is not careful enough, there is a good chance that just like the Wii U, the NX might end up being outgunned by its rivals.

Nintendo fans can only hope that when the gaming firm finally releases the NX next year, it would truly be a revolutionary, game-changing machine.
