Gold medalist Andrew "Bart" Simpson tragically passed away after a 72-foot Swedish sailboat he was aboard abruptly capsized in the San Francisco Bay on Wednesday.

When the deadly boat accident transpired, Simpson had been practicing for the upcoming America's Cup races, where he was supposed to be representing the Swedish team Artemis Racing, according to Zap 2 it.

The 36-year-old reportedly got trapped underneath the boat for 10 minutes. After Simpson was finally pulled out of the water and brought to land, attempts were made to save his life, but weren't successful.

Another sailor was involved in the incident, but survived with injuries. The remainder of the 13-man crew were all said to be unharmed.

Simpson had won one gold medal and one silver medal during his illustrious Olympics career. As of recently, he was serving as a strategist for Artemis Racing.

"The entire Artemis team is devastated by what happened. Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew's wife and family," CEO Paul Canyard said via statement.

This isn't the first time that such an incident has occurred in San Francisco Bay. In Nov. 2012, Larry Ellison's brand new 72-foot America's Cup boat also flipped over.

The America's Cup will be running from July 4 until Sept. 7.
