Brad Pitt has opened up to Esquire about his newfound happiness and the years he spent "f--ing off".

The 49 year old is the June/July cover story for the magazine. He told the magazine that there was a time that his life did not have purpose. He said that his life was all about the wrong things and was at a loss. He was drinking, doing drugs and finally decided to make a change a decade ago.

"Then I got burnt out and felt that I was wasting my opportunity. It was a conscious change," he told the publication.

Pitt said that his epiphany came about because he did not want to squander any more opportunities. He just had a feeling to start making necessary changes but thought it may have been too late. He was 40 and by that point had lived a hard life.

"I was a bit of a drifter. A guy who felt he grew up in something of a vacuum and wanted to see things, wanted to be inspired. I followed that other thing," Pitt said.

In the past decade, Pitt met Angelina Jolie on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2004 and she confessed that they fell in love while on the set of the blockbuster. Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time and their divorce became official in 2005. Pitt and Angelina Jolie became romantically involved. The two soon welcomed their first child, Shiloh. The pair, known as Brangelina, are now the parents of six kids together, Maddox, 11, Pax, 9, Zahara, 8, Shiloh, 6, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 4.

"There's constant chatter in our house, whether it's giggling or screaming or crying or banging. I love it. I love it. I love it. I hate it when they're gone," he said.

Pitt said that his life for the most part revolved around his family. He had few friends, but preferred it this way. He said he was happiest with his large brood.

"I have a handful of close friends and I have my family and I haven't known life to be any happier," he said. "I'm making things. I just haven't known life to be any happier."
