On the upcoming fourth season of Game of Thrones, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) will be going through a lot of grief because of her family members.

Presuming the Game of Thrones writers faithfully adapt the second half of A Storm of Swords, the third book in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, Cersei will be going through the wringer in season 4.

MAJOR BOOK SPOILERS AHEAD:

There is a huge moment in the second half of A Storm of Swords - one that changes the course of the story lines in King's Landing. At the wedding of King Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) and Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer), Cersei is horrified to learn that her son Joffrey has been poisoned.

Cersei is overcome with grief and accuses her brother Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) of poisoning Joffrey. She manages to get Tyrion behind bars and is satisfied with finally getting rid of him.

Meanwhile, Cersei's incestuous relationship with her brother Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) takes a turn for the worse. After spending a lot of time with Brienne (Gwendoline Christie), Jaime comes to realize that Cersei is a horrible person by comparison.

Jaime knows that Tyrion is innocent in the poisoning of Joffrey and helps him escape from his prison. Tyrion tells Jaime that Cersei has been sleeping with other men, which enrages Jaime to the point of not wanting to have anything to do with her anymore. Cersei feels even more alone than ever before.

Things worsen even further for Cersei because of Tyrion's actions before leaving King's Landing. Tyrion murders Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance), their father, leaving her even more grief-stricken. Being Cersei, though, she starts to see the plus side in her father's death and uses the incident to prove herself as a formidable figure.

Just as Cersei seems particularly down and out, she gets a new spark of life when her son Tommen Baratheon ascends to the Iron Throne in the wake of Joffrey. Little Tommen is all of eight years old, meaning Cersei would be able to control the kingdom even more than she could with Joffrey.
