Beckett (Stana Katic) won't be like previous captains when ABC's Castle returns for season 8.

How New 'Castle' Character Hayley Adds 'Flavor' To The 12th Precinct

Beckett will become the new captain of the 12th precinct, as previously announced, but she won't be like Gates (Penny Johnson Jerald) or Montgomery (Ruben Santiago-Hudson).

Castle show runners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter recently said in a new TVGuide.com report that Beckett will be a different kind of captain.

Is Jack Coleman Returning To 'Castle'?

"At the end of the day, what we were trying to do was shake up relationships," Hawley said.

"She's not going to be a captain like Montgomery or Gates," Winter added. "She's still going to be very boots-on-the-ground, but now she has to work with Esposito and Ryan much differently than in the past, and that's going to cause more conflict. And it's much different when your wife is the captain, the boss, versus when your wife is the detective."

But even with Beckett taking on a higher position than Castle (Nathan Fillion), Hawley insisted that the dynamic won't change that much.

"It's always been about the Castle-Beckett love story," he said.
