"[Showrunner] Gary Glasberg and the writers are working on something special to address the passing of Ralph Waite in the season finale," said a CBS spokesperson, "to honor both the memory of Ralph, as well as the character of Jackson Gibbs."

Waite, a veteran actor whose career spanned over 50 years, died on Feb. 13 at the age of 85. He starred in NCIS as Leroy Jethro Gibbs' father.

His CBS family expressed their sadness over the death of the actor, who guest starred on the show since 2008.

"Everyone at NCIS is deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague Ralph Waite," the NCIS cast and crew said in a joint statement. "Ralph was family to us, a tremendous talent and a very special man. We truly cherish the time we had with him. Our hearts and prayers go out to his loved ones."

Aside from the special Waite moment, the finale is also expected to have a big focus on Michael Weatherly's character, Tony DiNozzo.

"I'd really like to focus on and come up with something for the season finale that has a strong Tony element to it - in fact, we're about to sit down and talk about that," Glasberg previously told TV Line.
