After welcoming a baby boy on Christmas Eve with his girlfriend, who once worked as a stripper named Hazel, the Carolina Panthers quarterback confirmed news of the child's arrival.
“Yeah, I had a child,” Newton told the Charlotte Observer, who also confirmed the baby's name. “The people who needed to know have known for awhile. Nothing has pretty much changed besides our record, and the focus now is still the same. There were a lot of distractions last week – and the main one was probably the practice schedule more than anything.”

After telling the site he wanted to be the kind of father his dad was to him, Newton continued, "I think every man should be able to have that father figure in their life. I know especially where I grew up, there wasn't a lot of people who had men in their life."
“He’s kind of got a glow,” Newton's teammate Mike Tolbert told the Charlotte Observer, via Hollywood Life. “You can see it. You can see something’s different about him and obviously that’s it. I notice that he’s walking around with a much bigger smile and he’s a little bit more exuberant than anybody would be this time of year on a Thursday.”
