How will Netflix's Narcos tackle the eventual death of its main character, Pablo Escobar?

5 Pablo Escobar Films & Shows To Check Out After 'Narcos'

Narcos is quickly approaching the end of life of Escobar, played by Wagner Moura. The first season covered Escobar's prime in the 1970s all the way to 1992. Fans of the show may already know that in real life, Escobar died in 1993, so the big event is coming soon on the series.

Series producer Eric Newman spoke with reporters this month about season 2 - particularly how the show will tackle Escobar's death.

SPOILERS FOR FUTURE EPISODES OF NARCOS AHEAD:

"Trust me, if we could find a way to keep him alive and keep Wagner on the show..." Newman admitted. "He will die. The design of the show is we told 15 years of history in season one. At the point of Escobar's escape which is the summer of 1992, Escobar has 18 months to live. That's not something we can change. To stretch that out beyond another season would be disingenuous of us. That story was always designed to have an ending."

Even though Escobar's death is coming sooner rather than later, Narcos producers are confident that the show can go onward without him. Newman cited Showtime's Homeland as an example of how to continue their series even without a main character.

"There are any number of things that can happen after. We have not committed to one or the other," Newman said. "Obviously there are a lot of other stories in this world that continue on beyond him. In some ways, for me, what they've done with Homeland after losing Damian Lewis after season three is sort of amazing. To tell you the truth, most of my thinking is about season two because we're in the middle of it and I haven't thought that much about where do we go from here. I just want the best version of season two."

Narcos season 2 is expected to be released in 2016 on Netflix. The series is currently in production, but it is unknown if the series will be able to be released in August as it was last year for season 1.
