The official cause of Whitney Houston's death won't be known for weeks, but family sources told TMZ the singer allegedly died from a deadly combination of prescription drugs and alcohol.

While there are reports that Houston drowned in a bathtub in her Beverly Hilton hotel room, Los Angeles County Coroner's officials told family members the singer most likely died before slipping underwater because there wasn't enough water in her lungs to point to death by drowning, according to TMZ.

TMZ also reports that it was actually Houston's aunt, Mary Jones, who discovered her niece's lifeless body in the tub, pulled her out and began performing CPR. The celeb site had initially reported that Houston's hairdresser found the singer in the tub and that one of Houston's bodyguards lifted her out and tried to revive her. Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. on Saturday, but her body wasn't removed from the hotel until early yesterday morning.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney," the Houston family said in a statement. "This is an unimaginable tragedy and we will miss her terribly. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends."

The coroner's office ruled out trauma and foul play, but won't release any information to the public until toxicology reports are completed. However, prescription pill bottles were found in the music icon's hotel room, according to various media reports, though it was not known if she took any pills before her death. No illegal drugs were found in the room.

Houston battled drugs and alcohol for years and had been attending outpatient rehab for the past three years. She last performed at fellow R&B singer Kelly Price's Grammy party last Thursday and had been preparing to attend mentor Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy bash on the day of her death.

"She showed up to that party on Thursday night not as a diva," Price told Rolling Stone. "She came and sat in the background and watched me shine. She pushed me to shine. That's the Whitney I know. That's who they need to understand she was."

Price continued, "She wanted me to be heard, she wanted me to be seen. And on Thursday night she said to me, 'I am proud of you. I'm proud of you.' And that means so much because I understood what that meant."

Meanwhile, Houston's ex-husband Bobby Brown flew to Los Angeles to be with the couple's daughter, Bobbi Kristina. The griefstricken 18-year-old was admitted to the hospital twice over the weekend. Brown and Houston were married for 15 years before divorcing in 2007.
