If you've been watching the 2016 Olympics in Rio, chances are you've seen Michael Phelps' family cheering him on in the stands.

As the swimmer continues to see success as the Olympics press on, his family, including his mother, Debbie, his fiancee, Nicole Johnson, and his son, Boomer, have been on the sidelines. His father, however, has not been seen at any of the events.

Throughout the last several years of Phelps' career, he and his father, Fred, have had a number of ups and downs, but according to a report by the Baltimore Sun on Monday, the two men reconciled after Phelps traveled to Arizona for rehab in 2014.

"During Phelps’ 45-day stay at the Meadows rehabilitation center in Arizona after his drunken driving arrest in 2014, he seemed determined to reckon with the most uncomfortable aspects of his past," the outlet reported, adding that Phelps invited his father to Arizona after years of near estrangement.

“Being able to rebuild a friendship with my father, that's something I've always wanted," Phelps said at a later date. "We're starting from scratch."

Phelps' parents split when he was just 9-years-old.

Also during his rehab stint, which followed a DUI charge, Phelps mended his sometimes strained relationship with Johnson, whom he dated on and off for years before their engagement early last year.

Since the RIo Olympics began last week, Phelps has won three gold medals, which brings his total to a whopping 21 gold medals and counting.
