More and more apps are added every day for iOS and Android devices, but which were the best additions in 2016?

For those overwhelmed by the sheer breadth of apps released throughout the year, let's take a look at some of the best, or at least most significant, apps to come along in 2016. Our list includes learning tools, social media, aggregators and games, to give users the most rounded experience. Here are our top 5 favorite/best apps of the 2016:

Gboard (iOS)

The Gboard app essentially blends text messaging with a Google assistant, giving you the ability to search the web for restaurants, movie times and anything else you might need while conversing with friends. The app gives users the best of both worlds, from the ability to stay messaging without having to open up your internet browser.

Airtime (iOS and Android)

The Airtime app allows users the ability to video chat with five other people, in addition to providing the benefits of group chats, including easy-to-use features like YouTube to send viral clips instantly.

Cheeky Fingers (iOS)

Cheeky Fingers is one of the most popular music education apps in 2016. The app is essentially a piano dictionary, with users able to hear chord progressions that sound great, the ability to upload your own progression, and for beginners, educate themselves on the chords.

NPR One (iOS and Android)

One favorite app of ours is the NPR One app, which curates news stories and podcasts from public radio. The app helps give you what you want to hear, with the ability to skip and pause stories that come from the local, national and worldwide level.

Pokémon Go (iOS and Android)

Of course, we couldn't compile this list of the best new apps of 2016 without the worldwide phenomenon that was Pokémon Go. While interest in the Pokémon-hunting app has waned over the past few months, it was hard to resist the excitement of catching all of our favorite Pokémon in the wild.
