Sony seems to have finally decided to join in the "it" crowd as new reports are suggesting that they may be moving to the newer OLED displays next year. However, the company may only be doing so for their next generation flagship device and not with their entire smartphone line.

According to a report from Nikkan, the company has apparently decided to ditch its old LCD panels for its flagship smartphones in favor of the newer and more superior OLED technology. The company may also be doing so for the next couple of years as it slowly moves to having all OLED displays for its flagship devices.

Other Android manufacturers have already jumped into the OLED train for quite a while now. This includes Samsung, which is also actually producing OLED displays for itself and for other companies. Apple is also rumored to make the big switch this year with their highly anticipated new iPhone, the iPhone 8. Reports are also claiming that Sony may not be getting its stocks from Samsung, but from either LG or JDI instead.

OLED technology is of course significantly better than LED or LCD displays as each pixel of an OLED display is able to produce its own light. The self illuminating pixels produce a more realistic and dynamic contrast as opposed to LED or LCD displays that depend on LEDs to supply the LCD displays with light.

Sony has also been slowly transitioning its television to OLEDs, as shown with the release of the company's first OLED televisions, the Sony A1 Series. Even though the company has revealed that it would be transitioning to OLEDs for their flagship devices, the coming years may see a shift to OLED display for their mid to low range devices as well. This could be very likely as prices for producing OLED display have continued to go down in recent years.
