Ed Sheeran walked out of Kensington Palace on Thursday, Dec. 7, with an MBE but the ceremony did not go as smoothly as he would have expected.

Sheeran Broke Royal Protocol

On Thursday, the "Shape of You" hitmaker was honored with the coveted MBE, making him a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in recognition of his achievements in the field of music and charity. Prince Charles bestowed the ginger-haired singer with the honor on behalf of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

"[I] shook the prince's hand and talked to him for a little bit," Sheeran, said on Friday's (Dec. 8) episode of the Today show. "Apparently, I did a big faux pas, though. I shook his hand and then grabbed it and you're not meant to do that."

A picture from the ceremony shows the Grammy award-winning singer touching Charles' arm as he greets the royal prince with a handshake. However, he did not seem to mind that Sheeran had broken royal protocol as he can be seen smiling back at the 26-year-old singer.

Despite his gaffe, it was a special day for the Sheeran as he revealed that his grandfather, who died on the very same day in 2013, was a huge fan of the royal family and would be very proud of him.

Sheeran's Face Accidentally Cut Open By Princess Beatrice

This is not Sheeran's first royal encounter that has grabbed headlines. Earlier this year, the singer revealed that he had the right-hand side of his face slashed open, seemingly confirming reports that Princess Beatrice had accidentally given him the facial laceration with a sword while pretending to knight the singer.

He told Graham Norton about the incident, which took place at the Royal Lodge in Windsor last year. "I had a huge gash on my face and would tell people I fell and then suddenly, the story came out," he added.

Sheeran's New Single 'Perfect' Claims Top Spot In UK

The pop star has had an eventful last few days. He was recently named by streaming service Spotify as its most streamed artist of 2017.

Moreover, last week, he dropped a duet of his single, "Perfect," with Beyoncé and the remixed version of the song has already topped the singles chart in the United Kingdom, making it the singer's fourth single to claim the number one spot in his native country.

The collaboration is also Sheeran's 20th track to make it into the top-10 charts in the country, which is an incredible achievement given that he has released only three albums in his entire music career.
