James Gunn clarified a misconception that Baby Groot and Groot are one and the same. The Guardians of the Galaxy director once again reminded fans that original Groot is already dead.

Dad Groot

It is already 2018 and yet die-hard fans of Guardians of the Galaxy are still not over Groot's death. In a heart-breaking scene in the first movie, the talking tree sacrificed himself to save his friends. Then Baby Groot arrived and many believed he was the infant or reincarnated version of the dead Groot.

However, this is not the case. Gunn once again corrected the common misconception that first Groot died and gave birth to an infant version of his previous self. The filmmaker made the clarification after a debate on Twitter over who should be saved — Groot or the Porg from Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

"First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son," Gunn tweeted in reply to a fan who wrote, "But you can grow Groot back, as evidenced in your film. Once you kill a porg, it's gone."

Proof

This means dead Groot was not reborn into Baby Groot. Gunn pointed out to an important scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that proves Baby Groot is not the dead Groot.

"He doesn't have adult Groot's memories for one. Adult Groot would know what button to push!" Gunn said, referring to the scene where Rocket Racoon instructed Baby Groot to push a specific button. If he chooses the wrong button then he will blow up the entire area they are fighting in. Gunn said this is further proof that Baby Groot is not the original talking Tree. Otherwise, he would know which exact button to push if he was the original Groot.

"Ugh. Because Rocket says "push this button" many times. Adult Groot would only need to be told once. Maybe twice," Gunn added.

It is easy to assume that Baby Groot and first Groot are the same because they not only share physical likeness but also the limitations in their vocabulary. Both can only say "I am Groot." However, Gunn clearly pointed out that Baby Groot does not have memories of the first Groot. He also said that fans should be looking at the infant tree as an offspring.

Gunn initially said, "It's complicated," when asked about Baby Groot's origin. However, shortly after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was released, he explained that Baby Groot is an entirely different character. Soon fans will see the baby turn into an angsty Teen Groot in Avengers: Infinity War.
