The Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) universe is expanding!

Yesterday, Netflix dropped both the premiere date and the trailer for the South Korean spin-off of the hit Spanish series, Money Heist: Korea - Join Economic Area. Starring the familiar face of Squid Game's Park Hae-Soo as this series' Berlin, this new show marks the first step in an exciting expansion into the gripping crime drama franchise.

According to Deadline, the spin-off series "is set against the backdrop of the reunification of North and South Korea and revolves around The Professor (Yoo Ji-tae) who approaches Tokyo (Jun Jong-seo) with a plan to steal 4 trillion won from the Korea Unified Mint.

"He assembled a top-class group of thieves to pull it off, but chaos ensues as hostages are taken and a joint task force led by South Korean negotiation specialist Seon Woojin (Kim Yunjin) and former North Korean special agent Cha Moohyuk (Kim Seung-o) is formed to stop them."

In the trailer, we see the Korea group of thieves don the iconic Money Heist red suits and Guy Fawkes masks as they plan their "revolutionary crime." It's clear that North vs. South Korea geopolitics will play a big role in setting the stage for an alternate history-type story.

As often seen in South Korean media, economic inequality plays a significant role in the overall theme, as the disillusioned thieves hope to steal from a government that never delivered on the progress they promised. Already, this new troupe of charismatic thieves and use of thrilling music and intriguing sets seems to add up to a creative new take on the Money Heist concept.

Interestingly, the creator of the original Money Heist series, Alex Pina, also executive produces the South Korean spin-off. The original series went on for five seasons, and centers around a series of daring heists performed by a group of unusual thieves.

The final three seasons of the original Money Heist are among the top five most-watched Netflix series ever, with Squid Game continuing to occupy the top spot. Park's involvement in Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area bodes well on how the hit franchise will do on the streaming platform.

In addition to Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area, Netflix is also developing another expansion of the franchise. This time, it's a spin-off of the original Spanish series that follows the character Berlin, played by Pedro Alonso.

Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area debuts on Netflix on June 24, 2022.
