One of the characters in Bones season 9 will do some soul-searching in the first half of the season, according to new reports.

Dr. Lance Sweets (John Francis Daley) will be trying to figure out his priorities as the season begins, according to Tuesday reports by TVGuide and TVLine.

"Sweets is asking himself, 'What kind of psychiatrist is he?'" series creator Hart Hanson told TVGuide. "Should he help individuals, or is he someone who, like our plucky team, helps society as a whole by catching bad guys? He misses helping people, and he really wants to get hands-on. So, we're going to put him through that."

Daley shared similar thoughts on his character with TVLine, saying that despite feeling good about helping out the FBI, Sweets still doesn't think he's doing enough for the world.

"Profiling criminals wasn't the reason he got into his profession in the first place," Daley explained. "So this season will definitely explore that inner monologue that's going on with him."

Sweets will be venturing outside of the Jeffersonian forensic department at some point in the first few episodes of the season.

"There's an opportunity for him to do something completely different, and he tries it out," Daley continued. "And somehow it leads to a lot of guns being shot and a lot of drama in the interrogation room. It's chaos!"

Enstars previously reported that Sweets might be getting back together with Daisy (Carla Gallo) in season 9 after breaking up early in season 8. Hanson teased in late July that the couple might have a future together but would not elaborate.

Season 9 of Bones will premiere on Monday, Sept. 16 on Fox.
